Hi there my friends,
welcome to Day 3 of my #31DaysBlogWritingChallenge !!
It is also Monday and I am at work – having a coffee break now and thought to myself to show you all, my quilty/sewing friends, the other (geeky) side of me – my daily job.
I am a bio-scientist (cancer genetics) and work in one of the top cancer hospitals in US (and historically, the FIRST one!), Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Besides the hospital part, there is a ton of research and labs here, where all of us are trying our best to understand and cure cancer. I love my job. <3
Lab is somewhat like a kitchen, and here is my corner…
Or even closer, this is my bench (slightly messy, oops…but hey, this is “as I go” post, so no staging of any kind!)
Normally I don’t like to have too many papers on the bench, but I promise to clean up fast! :/
The second part of the work space is where we do cell culture work – growing and manipulating human cancer cell lines (most frequently, sometimes mouse or rat cell lines too), that have to be kept sterile, hence the Biological Safety Cabinet, or as we call it – the hood. This one is only a Level 2 safety as we do not work with any active pathogens or more hazardous cultures.
Here are my cell cultures of the day – all are breast cancer cell lines, as that is my area of research, breast cancer. These little “bottles” are called tissue culture flasks – cells grow on the bottom side, covered with nutrient media (red liquid).
And finally, my desk area in the office (ugh, again slightly messy, but hey, keeping it honest…)
I love my job.
I really do, and consider myself very lucky to have this opportunity.
Bio-science is a lot like quilting sometimes – lots of patient work on many small pieces to build a bigger piece. Like quilting, it requires good tools and materials, some space, lot of problem solving and most importantly, community that inspires and drives you!
Roswell is now a part of larger, Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, as this area grows into a great education, medical and research community in downtown Buffalo, part of the general, wonderful revival of Buffalo downtown area.
If you are traveling or in the area, definitely come to visit!
OK, not for the “Day 2 technology fail” part! 🙁 So, consider this now a Day 2 post, please! (see below)
Yesterday, I was going to be super-technological and take you all on “you see what I see” journey, or blogging-as-I-go experiment – blogging straight from my phone, as I was taking a lovely Sunday morning walk with the pups…
I took photos as I went (something I do often anyway)…
I typed quickly some short sentences whenever dogs would stop to sniff and “research” the smells (as I like to call that, LOL)…
and they were a bit puzzled I have to say! Oh and BTW, you may have not met Mila yet (on the right)- our second grand puppy! Isn’t she beautiful?
So I kept going and blogging-as-I-go, feeling so proud of myself, and I was going to press “publish” as soon as we get to our house…
AND I DID!!
It all looked just fine, until today, when I was going to do my Day 3 – I realized that Day 2 post is nowhere to be seen! Vanished!! Or never appeared, more likely…. BAH! so much for my super-technological intentions!!
I still don’t know WHY that didn’t work, as I did do few posts from my phone before (I use WordPress app) – tried some troubleshooting myself, but to no avail. Message to WordPress folks sent.
So, here you go – maybe some “you see what I see” feeling is in this post too?
Let me know your thoughts!
On to Day 4 – see you all tomorrow! 🙂
(PS – if you want to see more blogs doing this challenge, or sign-up yourself (still not too late!), visit Cheryl’s blog HERE !)
Love,
Marija
Interesting that you call the canine sniffing habits doing their research. I’ve always called it checking and leaving their messages. When I have youngsters joining me on a walk with Teddy, and they ask “why does he keep stopping to sniff?”, the message analogy seems to make sense to them. I guess we frame our answers based on our own experiences. I enjoyed reading your start on this challenge, Marija, and look forward to your posts that follow.
Hi Mary Ellen, that is so true – we all project what is close to us I guess! I also think that dogs leave each other messages this way. I even tend to change my walking path often to give Charley a chance to discover and leave messages in new areas… what we don’t do for our fur babies!
So happy you enjoy my blog and hope to get it to be a good blog soon! Thank you!
