Hello everyone,

It is that time again – to celebrate and feature beautiful new fabric collection!

This time it is Cozy and Magical and Plaid of my Dreams by talented Maureen Cracknell for Art Gallery Fabrics. It is beautiful and sweet holiday collection, with colors and art that will make any winter and holiday project beautiful! I could not stop playing with this collection!! With my trusty EQ8 software, I created many patterns that I liked, like these…

But after making these and few more, I was sitting on the couch, right next to my dog, Charley’s blanket that is a black and white Buffalo plaid… and then another idea came to mind and Cozy Buffalo Plaid quilt was born!

It is such a simple design and easy one to make! Flying Geese in 4 sizes and lots of squares is all you will need to make it. Just click on the button below to get your complete, free pattern!

Here is a little bit of background story how I made this quilt.

Besides beautiful prints from Cozy and Magical and Plaid of My Dreams, I picked this gorgeous Decostitch Elements CLOUD (DSE-700) as my background. I have to say this beauty is one of my favorites – so much gentle nuance in it, I just love it!!

As you will see in the pattern, this is a simple and beginner friendly pattern that comes together quickly with large, 12″ blocks. It features 3D Flying Geese blocks that are the easiest way to make this classic, if you ask me! But feat not – if 3D Flying geese are not your thing, you can make regular ones with same cut pieces, or even pick your own favorite way to make them.

Once the pieces were cut, making 3D Flying geese is a breeze as they only have ONE SEAM!! After making those, you just need to attach some side rectangles – here is my chain-piecing bonanza… I chain-piece one side and then just grab the first piece, turn it around and continue on the other side. What can I say – chain piecing is my zen! LOL

My blocks were all done, I press them nicely and was so excited to take a photo of all of them together…

…and then I realized that one of the Nine-patch blocks had a wrong color square in the middle!! GAH!!! (it’s the one to the left of the Tree blocks). But luckily it was just 6 blocks and pieces are big – just a little tie with my seam ripper and it was all corrected! With blocks done, the top comes together really quick and before you know it, it is time to quilt!

Here is my quilt, spray-basted and ready to go. I did take some photos of my basting process, using pool noodles and my dining room table – I will post that in my Instagram stories and save it, so you can see it there (my IG account is @maraquiltdesigns ).

I have to talk a bit about the backing for this quilt. For the first time, I was able to use brand new, AGF FLANNEL. Oh my goodness!! It is so beautiful and soft, cozy to the max!! It is just coming to stores and if you like cozy – it is a must-have!!

And guess what? – I will have another project to show you (and free pattern too!) using only these soft and cozy flannels!

Now to thread choices for quilting! Of course it will be my trusty Aurifil – I auditioned few colors…

Decided on the coral color one for the Buffalo plaid section and the cream one for the background of the trees… However, I might add some big-stitch hand quilting texture in the trees with this gorgeous, 12wt blue one? What do you think?

And just like that, it was time to do a photo shoot! Now, as much as I love this part, I have to admit struggling to create a cozy, wintery atmosphere in the middle of heat wave here in Buffalo… (where is a good old Buffalo winter when you need it?? ), but here are some photos…

And when it is summer outside and you are photographing a winter quilt, hydrangeas that look like snowballs will do – right?

To end this blog post, I will leave you with some cuteness that ensued when I tried to photograph this quilt in my son and daughter in law’s house, as I remembered their lovely fireplace in the family room… While the light wasn’t quite cooperating for that (notice how the coral color in the quilt changes?), my girls were happy and giggling all the way (hence, blurry photos!) and even grand-pup Oliver sat down nicely!

While I really love beautifully styled quilt photos and strive to create them, these cuties above always grab my heart.

I hope you will try this quick and easy pattern and if you do, please share your makes and tag me so I can see them and share them too! ( @maraquiltdesigns or use hashtag #cozybuffaloplaidquilt ).

I will be back soon with some more inspirations using this pattern, but in the meantime, for even more ideas, inspirations and patterns check out Art Gallery Fabrics’ Lookbook for this beautiful collection (just visit AGF on social media to find it!).

Last but not least – you may have noticed that my website looks a bit different? It is still under construction somewhat, but I hope to show you a new, updated one, with many new things very soon!!

Wishing you a happy summer,

Love,

Marija
